Homicide numbers trend upward

HIGH POINT â The mother of 25-year-old Robert Booth doesnât want her son to become just another crime statistic.
Booth was a beloved pastor admired by his family and friends in the community. His mother, Deneka Booth, said she and her relatives have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support since her son was shot and killed May 25 outside his condominium on Ardale Drive in south High Point. The father of a 2-year-old son earned his certificate of pastoral installation as a minister five days before he was killed.
Though High Point Police Department investigators still are sorting out a motive for Boothâs homicide, his mother believes her son was killed by elements that didnât want him reaching out to turn around the lives of people living on the criminal margins of society. ....

When police showed up at their door at midnight, it marked a terrible end to a lousy day. The married couple had started fighting that morning, over their daughter’s birthday party, and by evening, a mundane argument over who would cook dinner exploded.
According to arrest records, the wife said her husband followed her into the bedroom and “grabbed her with one hand around her neck and began choking her.’’ He tells a different story: He only grabbed his childhood sweetheart by the wrists. Theirs was simply a verbal altercation, he said. ....
