Bayonne Medical Center has launched a new heartburn treatment center and continues to build on its robotic surgery program, Chief Hospital Executive Dr. Vijay Singh told the Bayonne Community News. He said the hospital has recently opened an advanced endoscopic center with multiple modes of diagnosis and treatment for gastrointestinal disorders such as longstanding peptic ulcer disease. Usually, when a patient complains of recurring heartburn, Singh said that an endoscopy would be performed for diagnosis. The heartburn center takes treatment to “the next level.” ....

In an interview with the Bayonne Community News, Chief Hospital Executive at Bayonne Medical Center Dr. Vijay Singh detailed the current state of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Singh said the city has been administering vaccines to eligible residents at two sites, BMC and the RWJBarnabas satellite hospital on Broadway. How vaccines are allotted Vaccines are distributed from the state, to, county, and then to municipalities based on utilization. Doses are distributed based on the number of vaccines administered in the previous week. If BMC received 100 vaccines, it needs to use 75 percent of those doses in three days or 100 percent in seven days, Singh said. That way, the allotment will remain at 100 doses. Singh said that allotments may increase if all doses are used within that time period. ....

According to Chief Hospital Executive Dr. Vijay Singh, robotics has progressed a long way over the past 12 years. BMC is establishing a robotics institute because advances in technology have made robot-assistant surgery safer, less time consuming, more effective, and with fewer complications than traditional surgery. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alfredo Rabines told the Bayonne Community News that robotic surgery is safer than traditional surgery because the technology is more precise. There is less room for human error. Singh said that robotic surgery takes less time than traditional surgery because of its precision, allowing surgeons to perform operations faster. Patient turnaround time is quicker following robotic surgery, meaning shorter hospital stays. ....

On Dec. 22, Bayonne Medical Center personnel, including Chief Hospital Executive Dr. Vijay Singh, began receiving the Moderna vaccine under Phase 1A. Singh said a survey of hospital personnel across the state determined how many doses each hospital would be receive. At first, only 50 to 60 percent of BMC employees signed up. According to Singh, word of mouth spread among hospital personnel that there were no issues with the vaccine, bringing the number to 70 percent, and that number continues to climb. Encouraging vaccinations Singh said that trend could repeat itself during Phase 2, when the general population will receive the vaccine. And since 60 percent of BMC personnel lives in Bayonne, news of the vaccine’s safety is already spreading by word of mouth to friends and family among others. ....
