(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) Former Atlanta police Chief Erika Shields was named the new police chief of Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday after nearly one year of the department in the national spotlight in the wake of the Breonna Taylor case.
Shields resigned as Atlanta’s chief in June 2020, hours after a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, was shot and killed by police at a Wendy’s drive-thru.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said at the time, “because of her desire that Atlanta be a model of what meaningful reform should look like across this country Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency and rebuilding the trust so desperately needed.” ....

Breonna Taylor shooting death: 2 Louisville detectives fired

Jaynes, meanwhile, the officer who secured the search warrant for Taylor s apartment, was found in violation of department policy for truthfulness and search warrant preparation.
It was also announced Wednesday that Erika Shields, the former Atlanta police chief who stepped down after one of her officers fatally shot Rayshard Brooks, will take over as the leader of Louisville s embattled police force.
Shields will face an immediate challenge stepping into her new role following a record-breaking year of homicides in Louisville and months of turmoil and protests over the fatal police shooting of Taylor in March.
In Atlanta, Shields made reform a priority and was known nationwide as a progressive leader, yet she successfully won the loyalty of rank and file officers, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  ....

City Officials Fire 2 Detectives Involved in Breonna Taylor Raid

City Officials Fire 2 Detectives Involved In Breonna Taylor Raid
Detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes received notice last week from Louisville Police interim Chief Yvette Gentry.
Two Kentucky police detectives involved in the raid that left Breonna Taylor dead, including the one who shot her, were scheduled Tuesday to face a termination hearing. After months of unrest over the fatal shooting, Detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes received notice last week from Louisville Police interim Chief Yvette Gentry that she intended to dismiss them from the department.
Taylor, 26, was killed March 13 by police executing a “no-knock” narcotics search warrant. Cosgrove and two other officers who fired into Taylor’s apartment were not charged in her death by a grand jury in September. Investigators noted that Cosgrove fired 16 rounds into the apartment after the front door was breached and Taylor’s boyfriend fired a shot at them. ....

Attorney for LMPD detective accused of lying in Breonna Taylor search warrant calls allegations 'demonstrably wrong'

In a letter to Detective Joshua Jaynes, LMPD interim Chief Yvette Gentry said she has the utmost confidence in my decision to terminate your employment for breaching department polices on truthfulness and search warrant preparations.
An attorney representing the detective, however, said Wednesday he thought the allegations against Jaynes  are demonstrably wrong.
I was not surprised that the pre-termination letter was delivered; we d heard rumors about that, said Jaynes lawyer, Thomas Clay.
What did kind of surprise me were the grounds that are alleged as the basis for this termination action, Clay added. There are two of them: One, that he should have been at 3003 Springfield Drive when that search warrant was executed, and second was that he was untruthful in a statement he included in the search warrant affidavit.   ....
