The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League (SCCCL) are proposing measures to combat flooding, at the same time the city of Charleston is considering a large seawall around the peninsula.
The plan suggests using surrounding landscapes, such as natural breakwaters that can chop up storm surges and act as habitats for wildlife. In addition, it suggests adapting streets and sidewalks to filter storm water through rain gardens and water runoff captures containing plant life.
These proposals are not far off from suggestions seen in the Dutch Dialogues, which was released in 2019. The Dutch Dialogues recommended the city use its natural resources as a buffer to halt flooding and to be careful where it builds in the future. ....

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Rising sea levels and weather events could cause $20 billion of flood damage to homes across the United States this year, according to new data from the nonprofit group First Street Foundation.
The report titled “The Cost of Climate America’s Growing Flood Risk” analyzes the economic impact of “underestimated” flood risk to residential properties within the country. The new research also maps out the areas that present the highest risks and how much the flooding costs will increase 30 years into the future. ....

SC communities try creative solutions to challenges of rapid population growth

People relocating from other states have ballooned South Carolina’s population, and towns and cities popular with newcomers have scrambled to meet the costly demands that inevitably follow rapid growth.
Traffic congestion, school crowding, loss of green spaces, increases in stormwater flooding, rising rents and home prices, and a broad need for more public services are all predictable results of this growth. Towns, cities and school districts have been seeking and testing solutions, with mixed results.
Often, local governments that once encouraged growth and benefited from its arrival have seemed unprepared for the day when it would become too much, too fast.  ....
