KITCHENER Health officials in Waterloo Region are reminding people to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 over the upcoming long weekend. Vaccination rates are increasing, but Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang said there s a lot riding on this upcoming holiday and vaccinations alone are not enough. We must keep practicing public health measures to drive our rates down, she said at a regional council meeting on Wednesday evening. As a reminder, we must only go out for essential purposes. Dr. Wang said the steady decline in new cases in the region has stalled, possibly because of gatherings over the Mother s Day weekend. ....
KITCHENER Highest-risk health-care workers in the Waterloo Region are now eligible for a shorter interval between their first and second COVID-19 vaccine doses. “The Waterloo Region Vaccine Distribution Task Force is committed to balancing the priority of getting first doses in arms as quickly as possible with the priority to get second doses to those identified by the Province as being at highest risk,” Dept. Chief Shirley Hilton said in a press release. “With more vaccine on the way, we’ll be increasing our capacity at our vaccination clinics in the weeks ahead.” Anyone in that group with a second dose appointment scheduled between now and June 14 should keep their original appointment. Anyone else meeting the eligibility requirements can complete a form on the region s website so they can get their second dose sooner. ....

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang said local trends are moving in the right direction, but our rates remain high. As of Tuesday, the region s weekly COVID-19 incidence rate sat at approximately 67 cases per 100,000 population per week. In Ontario, it s around 128 cases per 100,000 per week. Dr. Wang said overall since the start of the third wave, rates in Waterloo Region have increased to high levels - although not to the same degree as some other regions. ....
stock photo On Friday, during a regional COVID-19 community update, head of the local vaccine task force WRPS Deputy Chief Shirley Hilton said Waterloo Region is expecting a Moderna shipment next week, although officials do not have a line of sight beyond that delivery. The Pfizer supply is steady until the end of May where we then see a significant increase, and as a result of the Pfizer stability we will look to shift some of our Moderna clinics to Pfizer. Hilton mentioned the region has exhausted the current allocation of AstraZeneca vaccine, and officials have no confirmation on further allocation timelines. ....
