Cedar Rapids to use $10,000 award to create mobile Neighborhood Resource Center

CEDAR RAPIDS The city will add a mobile Neighborhood Resource Center component to its Rollin’ Recmobile van thanks to $10,000 in funding from the National League of Cities.
City staff will use the van, which began bringing games and activities to neighborhood parks in 2020 to help remove barriers to recreational programs, to provide more services and resources to Cedar Rapids neighborhoods this summer, according to a news release.
The National League of Cities, an advocacy organization representing local governments across the United States, chose eight cities to receive funding as part of its 2021 Leadership in Community Resilience program, including two from Iowa, the other being Dubuque. The other six cities include Alton, Texas; Arlington, Mass.; Flagstaff, Ariz.; Raleigh, N.C.; Portsmouth, N.H.; and Spokane, Wash. ....

Today, the National League of Cities (NLC) announced Spokane, WA for the Leadership in Community Resilience program. Spokane is one of eight cities to be awarded in this program and will receive $10,000 in direct financial support as well as technical assistance and advisory services from NLC staff and partners to help them meet community-specific resiliency goals.

Southern Star Amidst the Pandemic: Jackson, Mississippi Leads on Climate Change, Equity, and Health

Early in 2020, the city of Jackson received a Leadership in Community Resilience grant from NLC to design and activate its Heat Preparedness Plan. Through a series of targeted interviews, surveys, and focus groups with frontline residents, the team set out to better understand how Jackson’s most at-risk residents perceive the dangers of extreme heat, and how they typically prepare for these often-life-threatening events.
Although it is now winter across much of the US and the worst of the summer heat has subsided, it is easy to forget that 2020 was a record-breaking year for extreme heat (again):
