Roofing giant GAF to produce recycled asphalt shingles

Unlike many other places, which may use materials like slate and terracotta for roofs, North America predominantly covers houses with asphalt shingles. About 75% of U.S. roofs are covered by this material, due to its low cost, water-repelling qualities, and ease of installation. But, the abundance of the material puts strain on the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 11 million tons of asphalt waste is generated every year, most of which ends up in landfills. It takes about 300 years to decompose.

Solving the environmental toll has been a priority for GAF, the biggest roof manufacturer in North America. More than 12 billion square feet of shingles are manufactured each year, and they last about 12 to 15 years on the typical roof before they need to be replaced. “What do we do with those shingles when we take them off?” asks Jim Schnepper, the company’s president. Report: More funding for research but impact not felt

PETALING JAYA: More is being spent on research, but its impact on the nation leaves much to be desired.
According to a recent World Bank report, much emphasis is being placed on increasing the quantity of research and development (R&D) and innovation but not necessarily its quality or academia’s links with industry.
Published in October last year, the “Assessing the Effectiveness of Public Research Institutions: Fostering Knowledge Linkages and Transferring Technology in Malaysia” report called for improving the effectiveness of public research to benefit society.
Most funding in Malaysia is focused on applied research but this has not brought high levels of technology transfer, said the report. ....

Soap refill company Gelo is salvaging soap dispensers from other brand

When you order a starter kit from Gelo, which makes pods of concentrated hand soap, you usually get a Gelo-brand soap bottle for you to refill over and over. But if you order Gelo’s Soap Bottle Salvage kits, you get a cheeky little extra: an empty bottle from another soap brand, such as Method or Softsoap. It wasn’t a cross-brand partnership Gelo says it rescued those other bottles from dumpsters or people who would have thrown them away and aimed to give them a second life as refillable soap dispensers.

“Part of Gelo’s DNA as a brand is really about promoting reuse and refill as an alternative to buying new plastic,” says Gelo CEO and founder Curan Mehra.
