US lawmakers concerned Taliban may grab military gear after withdrawal

US Brigadier General Matthew Trollinger, deputy director of politico-military affairs for the Joint Staff, told Senate lawmakers during a hearing on Afghanistan that US military equipment could end up in the hands of Taliban fighters and terrorist groups.
When pressed for a guarantee that enemy fighters in the region won’t steal some of the abandoned and gifted military equipment, Trollinger said “there aren’t any guarantees.”
But officials said they are using the time left until the pullout is completed to minimize that threat, while doing as much as they can to leave Afghan partners with tools to continue the fight. ....

Rawalpindi: In order to denounce Israel’s attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, traders and members of the civil society staged protest rallies at Raja Bazaar on Thursday. The rallies started from Bazaar Talwaran and after passing through Lal Haveli, Iqbal Road, Trunk Bazaar, Narnkari Bazaar culminated at Fawara Chowk in Raja Bazaar. The protesters demanded of the federal government to take up the issue with the international community to play its role in stopping inhuman violence in Palestine. – ....

A minor boy was reportedly injured after being attacked by a ‘pet’ lion in the Gulberg area of Karachi.
The incident took place within the limits of the Gulberg police station where the lion’s owner allegedly brought his pet outside the residence for a walk. The incident came into notice after CCTV footage of the lion attacking the boy circulated on social media. In the video, the lion was seen jumping upon the minor boy and the owner and bystanders trying to pull it off from the child.
After the video went viral, police caught the owner who has been identified as Omar. However, they added that so far they had not received any report of the injury from any hospital and no complainant had approached them for the registration of a case. Further investigations are under way. ....

KARACHI: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) organised a protest outside the KPC on Wednesday to condemn the Israeli terrorism and atrocities against Palestinians, as well as bombardment on civilian residential compounds and media houses.
Besides journalists, representatives of the civil society, lawyers and people from all walks of life attended the protest and termed the Israeli brutalities acts of barbarism and terrorism .
Speakers said that they stood in solidarity with not just the innocent Palestinians, but also with the media houses and free press bodies whose offices were destroyed by the Israelis. ....

About 2.3 million people in Niger are likely to be severely food insecure during this year s lean season because of conflicts, drought and floods, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
In its daily noon briefing on Tuesday, the UN agency said Tillabery and Tahoua regions of Niger, located along the Mali and Burkina Faso border, have been experiencing escalating cross-border attacks from non-state armed groups, causing acute protections concerns, human rights violations and increased internal displacement.
Between Friday and Monday, more than 10,000 people fled their homes in the western region of Tillaber, following violent attacks by non-state armed groups in Anzourou district, near the border with Mali, the agency said. ....
