Seismic gauge in Nicasio will help complete network

A new seismic monitoring station in Nicasio received approval from the county last week, part of an effort by the United States Geological Survey to fill the gaps in its expanding earthquake early warning system. Once the station is built later this summer, West Marin residents will be alerted more quickly if a quake hits the area.
The station will be part of ShakeAlert, a warning system developed by U.S.G.S. and a coalition of institutions and agencies. The system, which came online in 2019 and is still being built out, can deliver smartphone alerts to those nearby a few seconds before they feel the shaking from an earthquake. ....

Search crews on Monday morning discovered the body of a hiker who had been reported missing at the Point Reyes National Seashore the night before.
The victim was identified as 58-year-old Mitra Rasti of San Jose, according to the Marin County Sheriff s Office.
Rasti was last seen leaving the Bear Valley Visitor Center at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, park officials said.
At 10 p.m., the Marin County dispatch center notified the park that someone had reported the hiker overdue.

After a search involving Marin County Search and Rescue, park rangers and a California Highway Patrol helicopter, Rasti s body was found at 6 a.m. near the former Arch Rock area. ....
