On March 17, 1860, British troops fired into Te Kohia Pā, near Waitara, marking the beginning of the Taranaki land wars, and the end of life as Taranaki Māori would ever know it to be again. Every day, thousands pass the pā site, unobtrusively nestled behind fencing to the side of State Highway 3 in Brixton, and yet the weight of the whenua (land) remains largely ignored, Hoani Eriwata, of Te Ātiawa, says. ....
