City-size neutron stars may actually be bigger than we thought

What does a lead nucleus and a neutron star have in common?

Scientists have made new estimates of the size of mysterious neutron stars, revealing that the ultradense stellar corpses are slightly larger than previously thought.
According to the new estimates, published April 27 in the journal Physical Review Letters,
neutron stars the densest known objects in the universe aside from black holes have a radius of between 8.2 and 8.9 miles (13.25 and 14.25 kilometers).  ....

Neutron stars may be bigger than expected, measurement of lead nucleus suggests

Say what you want about lead, it’s got a surprisingly thick skin of neutrons, that is. In fact, the layer of neutrons on the outside of a lead nucleus is twice as thick as physicists thought, according to a new study. The seemingly abstruse result could have out-of-this-world implications: Neutron stars, the ultradense spheres left behind when stars explode in supernova explosions, could be stiffer and bigger than theory generally predicts.
“It’s a fantastic experimental achievement,” says Anna Watts, an astrophysicist at the University of Amsterdam who studies neutron stars. “It’s been talked about for years and years and years, and it’s so cool to finally see it done.” ....

When the Electron Ion Collider received the go-ahead in January 2020, it became the only new major accelerator in the works anywhere in the world.
All the stars aligned, said Elke-Caroline Aschenauer, Brookhaven National Laboratory Staff Scientist and a leader in developing the EIC plans. We have the technology to build this unique particle accelerator and detector to do the measurements that, together with the underlying theory, can for the first time provide answers to longstanding fundamental questions in nuclear physics. ....
