Liberal Democrat Police and Crime Commissioner candidate interview

THE new Liberal Democrat Police & Crime Commissioner candidate says he will seek creative solutions to policing concerns in Wiltshire and Swindon.
After the aborted May PCC elections, second place Lib Dem hopeful, Liz Webster, stepped down from running for the role again.
Her successor, Cllr Brian Mathew previously ran against the former PCC Angus Macpherson in 2016, said this election is Wiltshire and Swindon’s last shot at a proportional representation style vote for the job. After these elections, he said, the system will move from a preferred candidate to a first-past-the-post style ballot.
He said that this is an election which should not be happening and that if the Conservatives do not pay for the £1.5m election re-run, then they would pay at the polling stations. ....

Letters: Queen's dignity, Daily Mail readers and loss of public space protection orders

Facts or fiction
Oh dear me! The Adver s Daily Mail readers really don t like the truth about the success of the EU and the utter failure of Brexit, do they? You could tell from their letters that Des Morgan and others were almost incandescent with rage that I had the temerity to point out some very salient facts in my letter (SA, April 8).
Des and others claimed that Brexit was the reason for the success, thus far, of the Covid-19 vaccination programme in the UK. Utter poppycock - of course - but don t let the truth get in the way of a good story. The success is due to the NHS, not the Tory government or Brexit. It is also due to the co-operation and the brilliance of UK, EU, US and other scientists from around the world. ....

Herts Lib Dems PCC candidate would not punish cannabis possession

The Liberal Democrat Police and Crime Commissioner candidate has released his manifesto.
Changing how rapes and sexual assaults are dealt with and increasing on foot and bike patrols are among the 22-page manifesto released by candidate Sam North.
Mr North says there has been a 10 per cent crime – not including cybercrime – since current Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd took charge.
He claims that police should be equipped to build an understanding of what causes people to commit crime and intervening at the earliest possible stage.
The manifesto notes a budget of £240m, compared to the current £229.9m budget, which Mr North claims would come into effect with no council tax increase required. ....
