School Streets: Barn Rise to be closed all day as Westdene Primary trials scheme

The scheme is also intended to improve safety outside schools and encourage active forms of travel, such as walking, cycling and scooting.
Nine schools took part in the trial and there are currently four schools running the scheme in Brighton and Hove.
Westdene Primary would join Brunswick Primary, St Luke’s Primary, Downs Infant, Downs Junior, St Nicolas CE Primary in closing the road outside school gates.
The school is closing Barn Rise for the full day so pupils can take part in activities on bike safety, air pollution and active travel, the council said. ....

Brighton and Hove Council cut school numbers across city


EIGHT primary schools and one secondary school will have fewer classes from September next year because there are too many places across Brighton and Hove.
Brighton and Hove City Council predicted that there would be 325 spare places this September, rising to 744 if nothing was done.
This could give rise to the risk of the Government stepping in and closing a school.
The council based its estimate on the number of children born in Brighton and Hove, members of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee were told on Monday afternoon.
The council’s head of schools organisation Richard Barker said that action was needed in areas where there were fewer children although he said that the process was “not an exact science”. ....
