Parts of Muthurajawela Wetland cleared for private commercial constructions
Intending to build public opinion against the foreign private enterprises taking over lands on a large scale and causing irreversible impact on the environment, a forum named ‘Our Land is Not For Sale’ was formed recently with the participation of environmental activists and other civil groups movements in collaboration with the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR).
Today we see a tendency that the State mechanism has created room for selling lands and resources to large scale private enterprises. This has not only posed a threat to the forest cover but also to the coastal resources. Most ongoing development strategies seemed to be based on this. ....

Wildlife and Forest officers angry over circular preventing legal action against govt. institutions

by Ifham Nizam
Wildlife Conservation Department and Forest Department officers are up in arms over a circular which prevents them from filing legal action against government institutions which permit deforestation and other illegal acts in violation of the Fauna and Flora Ordinance.

“We are being discouraged from instituting legal action against culprits just because they are government institutions”, he said. ....

Visions of Destruction to Geneva

The Somawathiya National Park has hit the headlines. It is not for the spread of nature or the sanctuary for nature within it, but the illegal land grab of 1,000 acres that has now  moved on to 3,000 acres. Will this be the limit? When the Defence Secretary of the country, who has a military background, too, has to make such an admission, we are clearly in a new war situation. It is a war being waged against nature – the forests that have been preserved under our laws on Fauna and Flora Protection,  now moving to political destruction on the dictatorial power of the 20th Amendment, and the rise of crooked political forces whose desire for profit is the Hallmark ....
