In response to a deadly 2017 accident in Greene that killed the driver of a funeral home’s transport SUV, a legislative committee Thursday told funeral industry regulators to find ways to improve safety for their employees.
The measure, approved unanimously by the Committee on Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business, ordered the Board of Funeral Services to develop new rules to protect drivers and passengers by next January. It still needs approval from the Legislature. ....

Legislature sends Rep. Cuddy's bill to improve retirement benefits for educational technicians to Gov. Mills

AUGUSTA The Maine House and Senate voted March 11 to advance a bill sponsored by Representative Scott Cuddy, D-Winterport, ensuring certain educational technicians are not required to pay into the Maine Public Employee Retirement System (MePERS) and can instead collect social security, according to a March 15 news release.
“Maine faces a shortage of educational technicians,” said Rep. Cuddy. “Fortunately, not all of these positions require certification for them to work. That is true for people at the first level of ed tech authorization. These folks, who often work other jobs that already allow them to collect social security, should also be allowed to do so as ed techs. We need to be streamlining employment opportunities for these critical workers instead of making their benefit system more complex and cumbersome. ....

Housing justice bills offer comprehensive change to help Mainers find and stay in homes

A safe, secure home is a fundamental need, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the pandemic has made the housing situation even tougher for many Mainers, with more than 5,000 Maine men, women and children facing eviction and homelessness every year.
And once a person becomes homeless, the private housing market makes it extremely difficult for them to find a new place to live.
Advocates and legislators say Maine’s housing system needs comprehensive policy change to take care of all Mainers.
A slate of bills in the Maine legislature will make it easier for Mainers to stay in their homes, to find food, shelter and support when they experience homelessness, and to find and secure housing. ....
