PETALING JAYA: The Chinese community will be looking to perform prayer rituals and customs at this year’s Qing Ming, also known as Chinese All Souls Day, after missing out on the festival last year.
The 2,500-year-old practice to honour ancestors falls on April 4 this year. According to Chinese custom and tradition, the community will pay their respects within 10 days before and after the actual date.
Last year’s Qing Ming festival had to be observed at home as the nation was facing the first movement control order (MCO) due to the Covid-19 outbreak. ....

PETALING JAYA: Chinese groups are relieved with the revised Covid-19 standard operating procedure that will allow up to 15 family members within a 10km radius to attend the traditionally important reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year.
Describing it as a positive way forward ahead of the festive celebration, Malaysian Han Cultural Association president Datuk Goh Hin San said the revised SOP showed that the government listened to the voices on the ground.
“We suggested for 20 people to be allowed for the reunion dinner as well as for Chap Goh Meh. ....

PUTRAJAYA: Family reunion dinners on Chinese New Year eve (Feb 11), will be allowed for up to 15 immediate family members living within a 10km radius, without crossing districts or state boundaries.
National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique said the matter was agreed on during a National Security Council technical meeting yesterday, chaired by Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The meeting also agreed that religious activities in temples will be allowed on Feb 11, 12 and 19, subject to adherence of strict standard operating procedures (SOP), including not having more than 30 people present at a time, with physical distancing observed. The duration of each prayer session will be 30 minutes, with another 30 minutes ....

PETALING JAYA: Chinese associations and religious groups have voiced concerns over the standard operating procedure on Chinese New Year, saying that movement restrictions were necessary to curb infections but hope the government would be more mindful and lenient with such rulings.
Federation of Taoist Associations Malaysia president Tan Hoe Chieow said the government should allow family members who live within a 10km radius to have the reunion dinner together at home. ....

Updated CNY SOP likely to be announced on Monday (Feb 8), says religious group leader


PETALING JAYA: An updated version of the standard operating procedure (SOP) on Chinese New Year is likely to be announced on Monday (Feb 8), says a religious group leader.
Federation of Taoist Associations Malaysia president Tan Hoe Chieow, who consulted the National Unity Ministry on Friday (Feb 5), said the minister is likely to make the announcement.
“It’s more appropriate because it is a workday, ” he said.
Tan, who attended the first of two dialogue sessions organised by the National Unity Ministry on Jan 12 to discuss the festive period s SOP, said that the government had never made known to him or others who were also in the meeting of their decision. ....
