San Diego leaders in civil rights movement herald Chauvin guilty verdicts

Leaders in the civil rights movement across San Diego County cheered the jury verdict in the Derek Chauvin criminal case Tuesday, saying the trio of guilty findings will ripple across the community and help improve policing across the nation.
But as welcome as the verdicts were, more work remains to be done, several activists said.
“As the mother of a Black son, my first born, this is a step in the right direction,” said Francine Maxwell, president of the San Diego branch of the NAACP. “This has taught my son today what hope looks like, that when police don’t obey the law, this is what justice looks like.” ....

About an hour after commending the Derek Chauvin verdict in a statement sent to local media outlets, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria took to a dispatch radio to broadcast a second speech this one for the city’s police officers.
“Justice was served today against someone who does not represent you, or us, or our department, or who we are as a nation,” he told them.

Hundreds join women-led Black Lives Matter march through Little Italy

Chants of “Black Lives Matter” and other calls for social justice rang through the streets of downtown San Diego and Little Italy on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of marchers took the street.
The march was among many that have happened nationwide this month in the wake of recent police shootings of Black people, including Daunte Wright, killed last week during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minn. In nearby Minneapolis, former police Officer Derek Chauvin is standing trial on a murder charges for the death of George Floyd.
In a gathering before the march Saturday, activist Tasha Williamson recounted several incidents of San Diego police encounters with Black people that she said illustrates the issue is local as well as national. ....

LA MESA, Calif. On a Zoom meeting led by San Diego activist Tasha Williamson, Terry Owens Jr., the attorney for Aumarie Johnson, says former La Mesa Police Officer Matt Dages charges for a falsified police report are very concerning and slim considering the physical evidence.
“Very light charges. Officer Dages repeatedly pushed down Amaurie Johnson, grabbed him pulled him, all of that. Amaurie Johnson was manhandled, and there s not one battery charge at all,” Owens said. ....
