Three Mackay Whitsunday youth will find out if they have what it takes to become a politician as part of a “unique” Queensland program.
Whitsunday MP Amanda Camm said Nikkia Goodall of Mackay, Jessie Borg of Mirani and Dominic McCarthy from the Whitsundays were chosen for the assembly of the 26th Queensland Youth Parliament.
“I would like to congratulate the three youth members,” Ms Camm said.
“This opportunity allows youth leaders to participate in a six-month program including being part of a committee to propose law reform, participating in community consultations and debating their Bill in a youth parliament.”

A Whitsundays brother and sister have struck it rich unearthing an opal deposit valued at $1.2m on a hunt in southwest Queensland.
It is a reversal of fortunes and culmination of a lifetime of work and expertise for Isaac and Sofia Andreou, who own Opal Earth in Airlie Beach, in what is the continuation of a family legacy chasing opals.
Their astonishing expedition to the small town of Yowah, their "spiritual home" 900km southwest of Brisbane, was filmed and broadcast to the world by the Discovery Channel's Outback Opal Hunters.
Mr Andreou operates Opal Whisperers and he and his team - which includes his sister - uncovered a whopping 150kg haul containing the iconic and rare boulder opals known as the Yowah nut and Koirot nuts, or matrix opals.

It’s all ‘hoppening’ in the Whitsundays with Ballistic Beer Co set to open a new craft brewery in Cannonvale, turning the tap on a rapidly growing food and dining market.
The award-winning brewing company, known for its small batch brews and special releases, has acquired the Whitsunday Islands Brewing Company in Cannonvale.
Ballistic CEO David Kitchen said the addition of the 1000 litre brewhouse on Commerce Close was an important step in the company’s plan to become the biggest independent brewery in Queensland, and marked the first regional venue.
The Airlie Beach outlet will include a taproom and will be managed by a specialist in-house brewer serving a range of Ballistic beers, limited releases, and a selection of beers specifically chosen for the local market.

Reef health project hits final stages in Whitsundays

“The reef is under pressure, like a lot of ecosystems in the world,” Mr Cook said.
An interim report from Reef Check, released in April last year, indicated coral bleaching had a significant impact inshore and offshore across February and March 2020, with 32 per cent of coral populations being bleached in four sites surveyed.
The data also showed Hardy Reef had higher live coral cover than inshore reefs.
Mr Cook said across 2020 there was substantial bleaching, more than a normal year, but bleaching was no longer a surprise and was slowly becoming more prominent.
“With climate change its expected every summer,” he said.

Six kids, two adults injured in highway crash

Janessa Ekert
Journalist
I didn’t always want to be a journalist. In fact, when I was younger my dream was to be an archaeologist – who wouldn’t want to be like Indiana Jones? However, now that I am a journalist, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life.
I love listening to people’s stories and sharing them with others.
I’m a Queenslander through and though. Mackay is the furthest south I have ever lived. I’m an only child and I was raised in Airlie Beach.
My parents are former boaties; we lived on a 42 foot...
