Mackay Whitsunday youth get a taste of being politicians

Three Mackay Whitsunday youth will find out if they have what it takes to become a politician as part of a “unique” Queensland program.
Whitsunday MP Amanda Camm said Nikkia Goodall of Mackay, Jessie Borg of Mirani and Dominic McCarthy from the Whitsundays were chosen for the assembly of the 26th Queensland Youth Parliament.
“I would like to congratulate the three youth members,” Ms Camm said.
“This opportunity allows youth leaders to participate in a six-month program including being part of a committee to propose law reform, participating in community consultations and debating their Bill in a youth parliament.” ....

Burnett MP Stephen Bennett is calling on young leaders to apply for Youth parliament to create real change in Queensland.
Young people have the opportunity to rub shoulders with MPs and learn the inner workings of the government, but the deadline is looming.
It s an opportunity for our youth to have their voices heard and to create real change in their community, he said.
The program teaches you how the system works and I know the youth members also have a great time and make good friends along the way.

Now in its 26th year, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament offers young Queenslanders aged 15 to 25 years the opportunity to speak up for their communities and learn first-hand about parliamentary processes.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said the initiative had brought young people together to learn about our democracy, connect with their peers and have a say about important issues facing our state.
