In their place, events emphasizing mourning, reconciliation and protest were held in Kiwanis Park following the outpouring of grief over the identification of grave sites like those uncovered by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc in southern B.C. and Cowessess First Nation.
The day opened with pipe ceremony in an ongoing heat wave, drawing hundreds to downtown Saskatoon. The crowd, wearing mostly orange, gathered in the shade to hear emotional speeches and poetry at a speaker’s event called Bring Them Home. ....

A global pandemic and a national disgrace have combined to make Canada Day 2021 a different proposition for many people in Saskatoon.
Any thoughts of holding the usual party of years past in Diefenbaker Park were scrapped back in April.

“The third (COVID-19) wave was going full bore,” said Rob Belyk, who chairs the Optimist Club organizing committee for the event. With two months needed to prepare, and no way to gauge what public health orders might like by July 1, they pulled the plug. Optimist Hill reopens in Saskatoon with COVID-19 rules in place

Saskatoon’s Optimist Hill is open for the season.
The ski, snowboard and tubing areas at the site, located in Diefenbaker Park, reopened at 4 p.m. Friday, according to a media release from Optimist Hill management. The terrain park remains closed.

The release cautioned that things will be a bit different this season than in the past, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The hill will operate on a first come, first served basis under a provincially mandated maximum capacity of 150 people. Observers are also barred this year, meaning everyone in the park must have a lift pass. ....
