Routt County to move to level yellow; weekly cases reach lowest mark since October

Editor’s Note: After this article was published, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment approved Routt County’s request to move to level yellow. The story was updated to reflect these changes at 3:45 p.m.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS The Routt County Board of Health approved sending a letter to state health officials Wednesday asking to be moved to level yellow on the state’s COVID-19 dial.
The move was then approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment shortly after the meeting, and the county will be moved to level yellow at 6 a.m. Friday.
Under level yellow, capacities in restaurants, non-critical manufacturing, gyms, fitness centers and indoor events and entertainment will increase to 50%, up from 25% under level orange. Capacity in offices will also increase to 50%, but remote work is still strongly encouraged. ....

Bill to remove county commissioners from local boards of health not popular with commissioners

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS The Routt County Board of Commissioners and Board of Health have the same three members, but a bill soon to be introduced in the Colorado Legislature seeks to change that.
Rep. Cathy Kipp, a Democrat from Fort Collins, plans to introduce a bill she said will take politics out of county boards of health by removing commissioners from those boards. A 2008 law required counties to have an independent board of health but left a carve-out for commissioners from counties with populations less than 100,000 to double as the board of health. ....

New COVID-19 cases decline in Routt County but remain high among ski resort counties

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS New cases of COVID-19 in Routt County declined this week, but counties that are home to destination ski resorts continue to have much higher case incidence than Colorado as a whole.
The previous seven days saw 109 new cases, down from a record 170 new cases the week prior. While cases are decreasing, health officials said Wednesday during the weekly Routt County Board of Health meeting that it is too early to call it a trend, and test positivity remains above 8% locally.
“Are we moving in the right direction? Maybe,” Routt County epidemiologist Nicole Harty said. “While this most recent week is lower, it is still quite high in comparison to where we want to be.” ....

Routt County Public Health wants 2 weeks of level orange case levels before approving 5-Star program

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS The Routt County Board of Health will wait to sign off on the 5-Star certification program’s application to state health officials until the county has had two sustained weeks within the metrics for level orange on the state’s dial framework.
In order to receive state approval, the application needs to have a letter of support from the local public health authority as well as other community members. The letter from the board is the last piece of the application.
While businesses can currently apply to start the certification process, the county is not eligible for the benefits of the program until the two-week case totals drop below 89. With cases increasing locally, now up to 156 cases in the last two weeks, it will likely be weeks until the county qualifies for the program. ....
