In an effort to make travel safer for Ohioans, Gov. Mike DeWine introduced the “Hands-Free Ohio” provision in his Executive Budget proposal that would strengthen distracted driving laws.
The provision would make handling any electronic wireless device while driving a primary offense for adult drivers and would increase fines for drivers who habitually use devices while driving, according to a news release. Ohio is currently only one of four states without primary enforcement laws for adults.
As of now, using a hand-held electronic wireless device is only a primary offense for drivers under the age of 18, and a secondary offense for adults who text while driving. Law enforcement is prohibited from pulling over an adult driver using a wireless device unless the driver also commits a primary traffic offense. ....

GALLIPOLIS Faced with a growing issue of distracted driving in Ohio, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) have launched a new Distracted Driving Safety Corridor in Gallia County. The corridor, which goes from just south of State Route 218 to the Meigs County line on State Route 7, will now see targeted enforcement and increased signage reminding motorists to ditch the distractions and focus on driving.
State Route 7 has seen the highest number of distracted driving crashes for any route in Gallia County since 2019, and will be a major focus for troopers in 2021. According to OSTATS, 10,753 distracted driving crashes occurred statewide in 2020 resulting in 29 fatalities. ....
