DHARAMSHALA, May 12: As the Covid-19 pandemic takes a grim turn with the second wave in India, Tibetan groups and collectives provide aid for Tibetans impacted in Dharamshala, the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile and the residence of His Holiness Dalai Lama.
The Dharamshala-based Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) has initiated a campaign for aid, by collecting funds and redistributing those resources to the needy. TYC President Gonpo Dhondup told Phayul about his on-the-ground experience as he oversees the ‘Dedicated COVID Care Centre’ (DCCC) at the TYC Rangzen guesthouse in McLeod Ganj, “The DCCC has no oxygen supplies but is a proper isolation ward for asymptomatic Covid-19 patients. Tibetan residents of India are being caught in rising numbers of COVID-19 infections as the country struggles with a second wave of the pandemic that has seen cases surge since March, sources say.
India has now seen more than 300,000 new cases of infection each day for at least two weeks, with more than 350,000 testing positive in one recent day, and at least 220,000 deaths officially recorded, news sources say. Hospitals meanwhile report shortages of beds and oxygen supplies.
In Dharamsala, seat of Tibet’s exile government the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), a shortage of vaccines at Delek Hospital the largest Tibetan hospital in India has now put an end to a program aimed at inoculating Tibetans age 18 and over, one doctor said. ....

Gyuto Foundation raises $82K for medical relief in India; plans prayer service

The Gyuto Foundation Buddhist Monastery in just a few days raised over $82,000 toward emergency medical relief efforts in India, which is undergoing a devastating outbreak of COVID-19 cases that has overwhelmed hospitals. On Saturday, May 8, the local monastery is inviting the community to its prayer service, called Monlam, in solidarity with people impacted in India.
Over the past weekend, the Venerable Thupten Donyo, head Monk of the Gyuto Foundation Buddhist Monastery, launched a GoFundMe to provide emergency relief funds to the Tibetan Cancer Society in Dehli, India. The site is no longer accepting donations.
“We immediately closed the account so we could send the funds to India so they could buy urgently needed medical equipment like oxygen tanks and air concentrators,” Donyo said. “This equipment is essential during this pandemic crisis.” ....
