New Bedford Symphony Orchestra to perform at National Orchestra Conference Wicked Local NEW BEDFORD The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has been selected to perform a virtual concert at the League of American Orchestra’s national conference, which is also being held virtually, in June. NBSO President and CEO Dave Prentiss congratulated Music Director Yaniv Dinur and the NBSO musicians for being chosen to perform at the League conference. “We are very proud of this accomplishment. A national audience will now be able to enjoy the outstanding artistry of our orchestra.” The program features music by four women of color who are among the leading composers of our time: Jesse Montgomery, Rena Esmail, Keiko Abe, and Gabriella Lena Frank. Their pieces grapple with questions of self-identity and draw inspiration from the folk music of their traditions - African, Indian, Japanese, and Latin American. the Islamic call to prayer being shouted from a mosque in Turkey. It completely fascinated him. Thirty years later he would hear the call again and it would change his life. When Bentz first heard the call as a boy, his family was living in Turkey where his father worked as a geologist. He would see the muezzin (a man who calls Muslims to prayer) climb to the top of the minaret at the nearby mosque and recite the adhan at least five times a day. “I was mesmerized,” Bentz said. “It was so beautiful.” Back then the muezzin called out the adhan in a loud voice. Today, the call is amplified with microphones and loudspeakers. ....

The media group handed out its annual awards at a virtual conference held Thursday and Friday. The Day received 30 awards, 12 of them for first place. The Day, competing in the largest circulation category, tied for first place in Best Coverage of Coronavirus with the Waterbury Republican-American. The New Hampshire Union Leader was second and The Hartford Courant placed third. Peter Huoppi won three first-place awards in the video categories feature, entertainment and news as well as a second place in sports and a third in feature. ....
