Agartala: The removal of the ‘Martyrs Column’ in memory of those who lost their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation War, which was erected after 1971 in Agartala, has sparked off reactions from a cross-section of society in Tripura as well as Bangladesh.
Every year since the column was erected, the state government and Indian Army pay floral tributes to the martyrs on January 26 and August 15.
But the present-BJP led Tripura government has pulled down the column and shifted two tanks which were seized by the Indian Army during the war to a new place. The government has said it will soon begin construction of a modern sculpture where the column used to be.

CPM cadres revolt after veterans denied tickets | India News

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan (File photo)
NEW DELHI: At least two CPM district committees are believed to have requested the party leadership on Saturday to make an exception to its two-term MLA norm for candidate selection, even as posters openly sympathetic to several CPM ministers and senior leaders who didn't find a place in the list approved by the party's state committee on Friday appeared in various places across the state.
Five senior ministers — E P Jayarajan, Thomas Isaac, G Sudhakaran, AK Balan and C Raveendranath — and leaders who enjoy a great degree of respect, like P Jayarajan in Kannur and Raju Abraham in Ranni, are out of the CPM's list unless the state secretariat, which meets on Monday, decides to heed the pressure from the rank and file. Though quite not on that scale, the growing unrest among party cadres is reminiscent of the pro-Achuthanandan marches in 2016 and 2011 when the party denied the veteran leader a ticket.

BhashaAndolan - A Precursor to the 1971 war of Liberation-536813

BhashaAndolan - A Precursor to the 1971 war of Liberation

The first major conflict between erstwhile East and West Pakistan occurred over language and February 21 is a milestone in that struggle. This date is commemorated worldwide as International Mother Language Day, and draws its significance from the ‘BhashaAndolon’ or language movement in which the people of erstwhile East Pakistan were demanding equal status for the Bengali language. The BashaAndolan was the culmination of systematic negation and nullification of the ‘Bengali’ language the regional identity of Bengal.
Nearly 98% of the population, and virtually 100% of the urbanized, educated population, in East Pakistan comprised a single ethnic group of Bengalis, constituting about 55% of Pakistan’s overall population. Despite this the central government of Pakistan started the unilateral use of Urdu in moneyorder forms, postal stamps, currencies, coins, railway tickets and officialletterheads even without formally adopting Urdu as state language. This policy was unpopular in both sections of Pakistan, because it seemed that Urdu-speakers, an intellectual elite, and population minority, were implicitly declaring their culture as superior to all others. The decision by the government in West Pakistan to make Urdu the official language of Pakistan was vehemently opposed by the members of the ‘TamaddunMajlish’ which was organized by professors and students of Dhaka University under the leadership of Professor AbulKashem in September 1947, first ever to convene a literary meeting to discuss the issue of national language. Representing a unified platform of resistance against the Urdu single-language proposal, students and intellectuals of East Pakistan resisted and demanded that Bengali should also be made as one of the State languages and the medium of instruction in East Pakistan along with Urdu. The cultural domination of one ethnic group was deeply resented.

New farm laws regressive: CPI(M)

Samyuktha Karshaka Samithi begins indefinite agitation
CPI(M) politburo member and All India Kisan Sabha vice president S. Ramachandran Pillai on Saturday underscored the need to support and intensify the ongoing farmer protests in Delhi against the contentious farm laws passed by the Centre.
“If the BJP attempts to fight the agitation politically, it will be the beginning of the end of BJP rule. The BJP should correct its policies,” Mr. Pillai said, inaugurating an indefinite agitation organised by the Samyuktha Karshaka Samithi at the Martyrs' Column, Palayam, demanding the urgent withdrawal of the laws.
Mr. Pillai called upon all sections of society to stand united against the flawed policies of the BJP-led NDA government. All three laws are aimed at surrendering the agriculture sector and agricultural production to corporates. Farmers would be enslaved to corporate interests, he said.

Murderous physical attacks on political rivals or clashes between protesters and the police are as bad as it gets in West Bengal.

The political culture in West Bengal invariably plays out in the colours of confrontation. Every rally, from a street corner meeting to a mammoth march to any miniscule demonstration that snakes its way down the narrow lanes of the state's cities, towns or villages has the potential to explode in violence.
