A Minneapolis park in the heart of the North Side will be a bustling hub of sports, games and volunteer projects this summer — a place for kids to play safely after a difficult year of violence and COVID-19 disruptions.
A new coalition of nonprofits and organizations called Seeds to Harvest this month is boosting the number of free sports and activities at North Commons Park, launching its Summer Games program where kids can try out new activities from handball to mountain biking and chess.

Neighbors push back on Golden Valley hospital's expansion

Neighbors push back on Golden Valley hospital's expansion
Traffic concerns delay the planning panel's decision.

Plans to expand the Regency Hospital campus in Golden Valley are paused amid neighbors' concerns about increased traffic along the only road that connects to the hospital.
The proposal, which would add 29,000 square feet to the 83,700-square-foot facility and drive-up traffic an estimated 42%, is subject to city approval. After a more than three-hour planning commission meeting Jan. 25, the decision to recommend approval of Regency's plan was tabled to allow more time to discuss neighbors' concerns. Jason Zimmerman, Golden Valley's planning manager, said the commission will again discuss the proposal Feb. 8.

Anytrea Baker served up heaping portions of smiles and encouragement along with her school cafeteria meals.
In a decade with the Minneapolis Public Schools as an onsite food service coordinator, she reveled in her role as an upbeat "lunch lady" who sought to be a friend and trusted adult.
"She totally embodied why we are here," said Omar Guevara-Soto, assistant director of the school system's food services. "Nurturing all through access to food."
Baker died Dec. 10 after a severe asthma attack. She was 45.
Most of Baker's career was spent at Bethune Community School in north Minneapolis, where she became known to multitudes of elementary school students as "Ms. A," a less-formal nickname that was easier to say than her first name, pronounced uh-NEE-tree-ah.

The Best Nordic Trails in the U.S. | Outside Online

“The cross-country ski industry is expecting a significant increase in skiers this season, based on the increased interest in outdoor activities,” says Reese Brown, executive director of the
Cross Country Ski Areas Association. But don’t worry: there’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out. If you’ve never considered cross-country skiing before, this might be the winter you do. It’s a good way to get outside and explore local areas, and it’s naturally a crowd-free activity. While you can ski through the woods on your own, a designated cross-country ski area comes with grooming, trail maps, gear rental, and instruction. Either way, picture empty trails through a wide-open forest and, unlike downhill ski resorts, little in the ways of lines, lodges, and costly tickets. Here are seven of our favorite places to enjoy this sport.

Social Justice Billboard Project
Three billboards positioned high above the corner of 38th and Chicago, where George Floyd was killed, spotlight work by artists of color. New York-based Naima Green's "& full of dreams too" captures a path through a lush, green, tropical garden. "To All My Relations (Metakuye Oyasin)," by Ivan Watkins of Los Angeles, portrays a man with dreads and a feathered headdress sitting in a Minneapolis landscape of the Stone Arch Bridge, Mississippi River and downtown skyline. California-based artist Jessica Wimbley's "Masking; Testament" zooms in on the face of a Black person wearing a mask with images of BLM signs and visions from last summer's protests. NE Sculpture Gallery Factory launched the billboard project in July and will keep it up through at least mid-January.
