15 inmates at Inverness Jail sue Multnomah County, sheriff over COVID-19 response

Fifteen inmates who contracted COVID-19 while at Inverness Jail in North Portland are suing Multnomah County and Sheriff Mike Reese. 
According to the lawsuit, the inmates claim the county and sheriff were negligent by not taking proper safety precautions, denying testing and mixing infected inmates and guards with those who were healthy in jail dorms. 
The jail currently houses about 5,126 inmates. 
A Multnomah County Sheriff s Office spokesperson issued a statement in response to the lawsuit, saying:
The Sheriff’s Office does not comment on pending litigation. However, since the onset of the pandemic, MCSO has worked side-by-side with Corrections Health and Public Health officials to keep adults in custody safe and healthy, and has constantly adapted its response and updated its COVID-19 ....

In January, accused eco-saboteur Joseph Dibee suffered a broken jaw during a jail attack from another inmate at Multnomah County’s Inverness Jail. A federal judge singled out the sheriff’s office for not taking appropriate measures to ensure Dibee’s safety.
On Tuesday, Dibee tested positive for the coronavirus.
Dibee, 53, was evaluated only after his defense lawyer sought a judge’s order that required the jail to have his client tested. ....

Seven adults in custody test positive for COVID-19, infectious disease protocols implemented

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our workforce, adults in custody and those we serve. As COVID-19 continues to impact our community, the Sheriff’s Office was notified on Dec. 16, 2020, that an individual in-custody tested positive for COVID-19. Following the notification, the Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Corrections Health, immediately acted by implementing pre-planned infectious disease protocols. These actions include:
Quarantine and restricting movement in/out for all adults in custody in the housing unit and limiting access to the unit to only essential medical personnel.  ....
