A Westmoreland County prosecutor on Tuesday said a Harrisburg woman drove thousands of dollars of heroin into the region five years ago as part of a scheme by a convicted drug dealer to raise money to finance an appeal of his 30-year prison sentence. Assistant District Attorney Jim Lazar told jurors Sade Franklin operated as a drug mule for two men convicted in 2013 for their roles in a multi-million dollar drug ring that operated in the county. “This is a drug conspiracy that is complex and at the same time very simple,” Lazar said. “It involved a man from a state prison cell who wanted to fight a drug case with drug money.” ....
Mirror staff reports HARRISBURG– A Huntingdon corrections officer was recognized by Gov. Tom Wolf for his efforts in combating COVID-19. Craig Northrop, a Flinton resident who currently works at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon, was one of three corrections officers in the state that received a Governor’s Award for Excellence. Northrop began working for the Department of Corrections at SCI Houtzdale in 2005 as a general industry factory foreman and was promoted as general factory supervisor in 2010. In 2019, he was promoted again to a correctional industries manager 2 at SCI Huntingdon. Northrop was recognized for his efforts to help make the state safe by manufacturing personal protective equipment. ....
pray@altoonamirror.com A Blair County judge ruled last week that an Altoona man cannot withdraw his guilty pleas to multiple charges that were filed after a high-speed car chase through the city. After police took Ricky Lee Jones, 38, into custody on Nov. 27, 2018, they charged him with possession of firearms prohibited, attempting to elude police, recklessly endangering others and accidents involving damage to vehicles and property. According to police reports at the time, Jones, during the chase, hit the back porch of a home on Pottsgrove Road, hit three other vehicles, went through 13 stop signs and struck an embankment. After striking the embankment, he fled on foot and hid in a bush in the front yard of a home. ....
pray@altoonamirror.com An appeal by an Altoona man in prison for drug offenses has been dismissed by the Pennsylvania Superior Court due to a procedural error. Derrick Dewight Dawson, 35, was charged in September 2011 with making three cocaine sales to a police confidential informant. The sales occurred on different dates, and each charge was docketed under a different number in the Blair County Prothonotary’s Office. Dawson eventually was convicted of possession with intent to deliver and related offenses for each sale. He was sentenced to 33 to 66 years in prison and is incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon. ....
