Jennifer Pena made one great choice that is helping her overcome all the terrible ones.
Pena, 31 and from North Fort Myers, had been arrested 17 times over the previous 11 years on charges ranging from trespassing, probation violation and failure to appear in court to burglary, grand and petty theft and drug possession.
Before an eight-month prison sentence concluded last year, the Lee County Jail connected her with Better Together, a privately funded, non-profit organization that specializes in keeping families together and finding job matches for people needing a second chance.
Pena’s timing in rebuilding her life is coinciding with a surge in “help wanted” signs appearing back on restaurants, the retail sector and industrial-type work as the economy continues to recover from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Today, there are two opportunities for a second chance at finding a job.
The organization Better Together is hosting two job fairs for people facing employment barriers, like those who have been released from prison.
The job fairs will be at Turning Point Church at 3405 Pelican Landing Parkway in Bonita Springs and Rise Christian Church at 50 Bell Blvd. N. in Lehigh Acres. Both run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The second consecutive Nationwide Day of Second Chances will be held Thursday in Lehigh Acres and Bonita Springs to bring together employers and job seekers.
The Nationwide Day of Second Chances will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 29, at Rise Christian Church, 50 Bell Blvd., N. Lehigh Acres and Turning Point Church, 3405 Pelican Landing Parkway, Bonita Springs. The event will include social distancing and wearing of masks to ensure all involved are CDC compliant.
Better Together CEO Megan Rose said the organization began in 2015 and has helped more than 34,000 job seekers, as well as kept 3,000 kids out of foster care. ....
