Ireland’s Ecocem Materials has announced an EUR22.5m equity investment by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) and Breakthrough Energy Ventures Europe. BEV will also nominate a director to the company’s board.
The investment will enable Ecocem to bring new ultra-low-carbon cements to the market over the coming years, which will draw on its deep knowledge of slag-based cements and incorporate new materials and technologies developed by the company, according to a press release.

Green cement company Ecocem has announced the completion of a €22.5 million equity investment by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) and Breakthrough Energy Ventures-Europe (BEV-E). BEV will also nominate a director to the company’s Board of Directors.
This investment will enable Ecocem to bring new ultra-low-carbon cements to the market over the coming years. These new products will draw on Ecocem’s deep knowledge in slag-based cements and incorporate new materials and technologies developed by the company.
The manufacture of cement generates 7% of global CO
2 emissions. Progress in decarbonisation has been limited by the high level of process-related CO
2 emissions of cement clinker manufacture. The sector faces high investment and high operating costs from the deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage/Use (CCSU) beyond 2030. Only limited further decarbonisation potential is foreseen this decade. ....

Bill Gates backs $1/kg green hydrogen water splitter technology

A potential game-changing green hydrogen technology developed by Israeli-based company H2Pro, which is aiming at producing green hydrogen at $US1/kg, has closed a $US22 million funding round led by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
H2Pro’s efforts to develop a water splitting device that the company claims can reach 95% efficiency and costs significantly less than an electrolyser. E-TAC, short for Electrochemical,Thermally Activated Chemical, is similar to electrolysis in that it uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
However, unlike conventional electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen are generated separately in different steps – an Electrochemical (E) step and a Thermally-Activated Chemical (TAC) step. ....
