Deadlines loom for homeless living in Kalamazoo hotels while long-term fixes explored

KALAMAZOO, MI Over the past four months, one former motel and one hotel, about 15 minutes apart, have become temporary homes for more than 200 individuals facing homelessness in Kalamazoo.
More than a short-term stopgap, both properties the former Knights Inn motel at 1211 S. Westnedge Ave. and an undisclosed hotel on the western side of the county have been buzzing with service providers working within strict time constraints to connect as many residents as possible to more permanent housing solutions.
“We just sort of stay humble and keep pushing through,” said Kristina Rodriguez, a mother of four who has been staying in the hotel with her children and fiancé. “It’s definitely been a learning experience.” ....

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A collaborative effort among Kalamazoo nonprofits and government will provide safe shelter for up to 125 unhoused individuals currently staying at outdoor encampments in the area.
The Hoteling Intervention Program will offer up to 90 hotel rooms, plus meals, personal care items, case management support and links to support services, according to a news release Tuesday.
The new program got a financial boost Monday when the Kalamazoo City Commission approved a grant of $250,000 through the Foundation for Excellence to United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region’s Disaster Relief Fund. ....

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) To help support efforts in homeless assistance. Kalamazoo City Commissioners have voted to approve an agreement in the form of a $250,000 grant to the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region.
During a virtual meeting Monday, Commissioners discussed the matter at length with representatives of various housing assistance entities.
According to city documents, the funds would be taken from the Foundation for Excellence 2020 Fiscal Year fund balance to support the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) and amend the 2021 budget accordingly. ....
