Nine out of ten companies under the PLI scheme for handsets could not meet the year one incremental sales turnover targets in the financial year ended March 2021 despite their best efforts, CII, Ficci and Assocham said in separate letters to the government.
Top industry associations have urged the government to defer incentive timeline for global and domestic smartphone makers under the production-linked incentive scheme in view of disruptions in the supply chain and delay in setting up of production lines due to the pandemic.

The heavy toll that chip shortages have inflicted on the auto industry is now broadening to other sectors. Exploding demand and factory outages are creating acute chip shortages and the effect of supply shortfalls is spreading beyond carmakers to any firm that relies heavily on semiconductors, such as smartphone and personal computers (PC) makers, says S&P Global Ratings. 
 
Clifford Kurz, credit analyst at S&P says, The chip shortage may cap the revenue growth of some PC and smartphone makers, and impede their ability to capitalize on surging consumption. ....

China's 5G phone shipments reach 167 million in 2020, says Report


In the fourth quarter last year, China shipped 60.1 million 5G handsets, data from IDC showed.
Last year, the country had shipped a total of 325.7 million units of smartphones, down 11.2 percent year on year.
The shipment of smartphones in Q4 edged up 0.3 percent year on year to 86.4 million units, with major vendors in the Chinese market registering a favorable growth, the firm said.
Huawei continues to dominate the domestic mobile phone market with a 38.3-percent market share last year. Its total shipment reached 124.9 million units, according to the IDC.
Vivo and OPPO, another two Chinese smartphone makers, took up 17.7 percent and 17.4 percent of the market, respectively, followed by Xiaomi with a 12-percent share, reports Xinhua news agency. ....
