Strategy Analytics: Xiaomi Smartphone Shipments Grew 1000 Percent in Chile in Q1 2021, Poised for Second Spot in 2021

According to new research from Strategy Analytics, Chile smartphone shipments jumped 71% YoY to an all-time high of 2.9 million units in the first quarter of 2021. Xiaomi was the star performer, surging over 1000% annually to capture third place and a record 16% marketshare. Xiaomi is on track to grab second place by the end of the year.

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, said, Smartphone shipments in Chile jumped 71% YoY from 1.7 million units during Q1 2020 to a record 2.9 million in Q1 2021. Despite Covid and political uncertainty, demand for smartphones soared due to a buoyant economy, strong exports, and a perceived high vaccination rate. Chile is the third largest smartphone market in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico. ....

Global smartphone shipments are on the up in Q1 2021, 27% YoY, as key regions subdue the pandemic , although with COVID-19 still out there and causing havoc in India, the rest of the year s results from Canalys and others will no doubt be watched closely by the world s smartphone makers.
In Q1 2021, worldwide smartphone shipments reached 347 million units, up 27% year on year.
Samsung took first place, shipping 76.5 million to take a 22% share. Apple shipped 52.4 million iPhones, to take a 15% share. Its iPhone 12 Mini has sold below expectations, but strength in other iPhone 12 models, as well as stronger demand for the older iPhone 11, helped it maintain strong momentum. ....

CHENNAI: The second wave of the pandemic and resulting restrictions in Delhi, Mumbai and other locations is likely to dent smartphone shipments by almost 10%-15% in the period April-June as sales in these cities account for almost one-fourth of the total market. This will result in a loss of around 5 million units, estimates market tracker Counterpoint Research.
However, the research firm said it is keeping its annual forecast for the year unchanged for now.
“This estimate factors in that more states will likely have partial lockdowns. Smartphone demand is generally resilient and there are other variables at play like e-learning that may drive sales,” Tarun Pathak, director, Counterpoint Research, said. ....
