The Daily Mail understands that the Treasury and No 10 have yet to agree a way to pay for the plans. And sources familiar with the discussions said they were not aware of any firm proposals.

Westminster's Central Lobby tiles restored after nine-year project

Westminster’s Central Lobby tiles restored after nine-year project
Nicholas Cecil

The historic jigsaw was first put down some 150 years ago on the floor of Parliament’s most public meeting place.
But it became so worn that the parliamentary authorities launched a project nearly a decade ago to restore it to its former glory with new encaustic (“burnt in”) tiles, each individually handmade.
The key central tile has now been put in place by stone mason Andy Midwinter in time for the State Opening of Parliament on May 11. ....

The final handmade tile in the restoration of a lobby at the heart of the Palace of Westminster has been laid.
Almost 60,000 have been restored and replaced in the middle of Central Lobby, including original ones which were designed by Augustus Welby Pugin that would have carried the footsteps of Winston Churchill, William Gladstone, Margaret Thatcher, and countless other political figures.
Stone mason Andy Midwinter said: “It really feels like the end of an era.”
The work on the vividly-coloured tiles which had deteriorated after 150 years of use took nine years to complete. ....
