Online learning to help keep senior Australians safe from sexual abuse

The Morrison Government is partnering with the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) for an online learning package aimed at helping aged care providers and health professionals prevent, identify, and respond to sexual abuse.
Funded via a $168,000 grant from the Australian Government, OPAN is working with leading researcher Dr Catherine Barrett to develop Abuse of the older person: eLearning program for health professionals.

A man who walked in on his 70-year-old wife with dementia being allegedly sexually assaulted by a fellow resident at her Sydney aged care home has blamed under-staffing for failing to properly monitor residents.
The 75-year-old man, José, said he has not been able to sleep properly since the alleged 20 March assault on his wife, Shannon, and that he wants answers about why his wife was able to wander off alone down a corridor and into the man’s room.
He has also spoken of his distress after the alleged assault was described in an incident report as “cuddling”. ....

Four in 10 aged care residents have experienced some form of abuse or neglect, a rate of elder abuse close to the upper range found in overseas studies.
Described by experts as a hidden and neglected problem in Australia, an experimental survey of elder abuse among 391 residents living in 67 aged care facilities found 39.4 per cent said they experienced emotional and physical abuse and/or neglect.
