When Nicholas Hall started as a chef at The Bays aged care home in Hastings in 2018, he recalls noticing something strange: almost all the elderly residents there seemed to be on a diet where their food was cut up.
“I had a lot of residents coming to me and saying that they did not want their food cut up,” Hall told the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. “They were perfectly able to cut up their own food.” ....

Husband walks in on wife being allegedly sexually assaulted at Sydney aged care home

A man who walked in on his 70-year-old wife with dementia being allegedly sexually assaulted by a fellow resident at her Sydney aged care home has blamed under-staffing for failing to properly monitor residents.
The 75-year-old man, José, said he has not been able to sleep properly since the alleged 20 March assault on his wife, Shannon, and that he wants answers about why his wife was able to wander off alone down a corridor and into the man’s room.
He has also spoken of his distress after the alleged assault was described in an incident report as “cuddling”. ....

State government ends Brisbane lockdown as Australia’s vaccine rollout is in a shambles
The Queensland Labor government yesterday ended a three-day lockdown of Brisbane that it had announced on Sunday in response to the spread of the highly infectious B117 “UK” variant of COVID-19 in the state capital.
In a press conference announcing that there would be no extension of the lockdown, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young invoked low case numbers to justify the decision. After at least seventeen local infections were detected in the first several days of the outbreak, just one new case was confirmed yesterday from more than 30,000 tests and none were reported this morning. ....
