LANGLEY, Wash. - Emergency crews were called to Whidbey Island for a rescue on Tuesday, but it wasn t a human in need of a rescue.
Just before 7:30 p.m., South Whidbey Fire/EMS, the Island County Sheriff s Office and the Langley Police Department were called to Old Beach Road in the Mutiny Bay area for reports of an elephant seal caught trapped in a vault of a stormwater drainage system in the lawn of a condominium complex.
According to South Whidbey Fire/EMS, the vault is connected to Mutiny Bay by a large pipe, and the seal, known as Elwood, likely came through that pipe to get into the vault but was unable to get back to the bay that way. ....

Crews rescued from a storm drain earlier this week on Whidbey Island.
On Tuesday night, crews responded to a report of a seal caught in a storm drain near Old Beach Road in the Mutiny Bay area.
When crews from South Whidbey Fire/EMS, Island County Sheriff’s Office, Langley Police Department and the Orca Network arrived, they found a young elephant seal, also known as Elwood, trapped in a vault of a stormwater drainage system in the lawn of a condominium complex, officials said.
According to an official from Orca Network, Elwood appeared exhausted from treading water. ....

CAMANO ISLAND, Wash. – SE Camano Drive at South Hartman Place was closed for several hours Saturday afternoon while the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated a fatal collision involving a single vehicle.
Washington State Patrol says the vehicle was travelling NB on SE Camano Dr at a high-rate of speed when it went off the roadway and struck a power pole, snapping it completely in half.
The driver, a 20-year-old male, died at the scene and two 17-year-old passengers were transported to the hospital one with serious injuries and one with life-threatening injuries. ....
