PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – New legislation is being proposed by two state lawmakers that aims to provide free transportation on RIPTA buses for Rhode Island residents.
Sen. Meghan Kallman (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, North Providence) and Rep. Leonela “Leo” Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) unveiled the legislation during a press conference Wednesday at Kennedy Plaza in Providence.
Sen. Kallman said the plan also sets up the funding structure to support the initiative financially which is to replace revenue from bus fares with taxes on gasoline and carbon.
“Public transportation cuts across so many issues,” said Senator Kallman. “It’s a climate and environment issue. It’s a neighborhood and quality-of-life issue. It’s an economic issue. Rhode Island House Minority Leader Blake Filippi says his biggest priority of the 2021 General Assembly continues to be the proposed IGT-Twin River 20-year contract extension with the state.
In a wide-ranging interview with GoLocal, Filippi also talked about hot-button issues including charter school expansion, nursing home worker pay, and more
It s no longer [just] about IGT, said Filippi, who had fought against a number of provisions when IGT and Twin River were at odds over a contract extension before teaming up.
When you read the legislation it authorizes a 14-year extension of the existing Twin River host contract which provides for 28% of net terminal income from the machines and 84% of the table games going to Twin River, said Filippi. For years we were just talking about IGT and that contract and that was only 9 1/2% of net VLT (video lottery terminal) income. ....

NEWPORT More than 100 people packed the western end of Bowen’s Wharf Saturday afternoon as Gov. Dan McKee signed what speakers called the “landmark” Act on Climate aimed at cutting the state’s greenhouse-gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
“This is a milestone in the fight against climate change,” said McKee, who was accompanied by multiple state leaders. “Rhode Island is already feeling its impacts across our economy and our environment. With 400 miles of coastline, the Ocean State is on the front lines of this climate crisis.”
“This legislation presents an opportunity to enhance our economy, our public health, environmental equity, and our natural environment,” he said. “The Act on Climate is a bold response to a serious threat.” ....
