Plans to replace Australia s much-loved but decades-old scientific base on Macquarie Island in the sub-Antarctic have been shelved, with a team of tradies en route to the island this week to begin renovating the site.
The base is usually home to around 20 scientists and researchers but is host to a range of occupational health and safety issues and environmental contamination.
The seven year project will see some buildings decommissioned and others refurbished.

But regardless of that, the Coastwatchers have long been praised for overcoming hostile environments to perform their duties, which as well as keeping watch included filing weather reports and doing scientific research. As an 18-year-old radio operator, Jones was the youngest of 56 men who did tours of duty at the inhospitable southern bases – two located on the Main Auckland Island and one on even more remote Campbell Island.

New Zealand s only oceangoing cruise line has drafted a fresh-faced birdwatcher for a unique expedition to the Subantarctic Islands.
Oscar Thomas, a 20-year-old ecology student and naturalist, has joining Heritage Expeditions ship Spirit of Enderby, currently on a 7-day voyage to the Auckland Islands and Snares.
It is a trip that offers a glimpse into the habitat of oceangoing birds Oscar has always dreamed of encountering.
