Walks, seminars mark World Environment Day in GB - Newspaper

GILGIT: Awareness walks, seminars and clean-up campaigns marked the World Environment Day across Gilgit-Baltistan on Saturday.
The GB forest, wildlife and environment department in collaboration with the local communities, national and international NGOs and educational institutions organised various programmes across the region.
The parks, wildlife and forest department organised a rally, starting from the Forest and Wildlife Complex in Jutial and ending at Bab-i-Gilgit.
The participants said this year’s theme of the day was ‘ecosystem restoration’. They said GB people were among the world’s most vulnerable communities due to the climate change impact. They said sensitive and fragile environment of the region needed to be protected from environmental degradation. ....

Baltistan varsity, consortium to launch research programmes - Newspaper

GILGIT: The University of Baltistan Skardu and the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) have established a partnership to initiate academic and research programmes.
The HUC is a network of 88 universities from the eight regional member countries (RMC) from the Hindukush Himalaya region. It works on strengthening research and scholarship on issues relevant to the region.
According to a press release issued here the other day, the understanding was reached at a virtual meeting at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Khatmandu, Nepal, on Wednesday.
ICIMOD is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge-sharing centre, serving the eight RMCs.
Under the partnership, HUC and the Baltistan varsity have agreed to mutually establish academic and research partnership projects for environmental and humanitarian studies in the trans-Himalayan region with focus on water, disaster risk reduction, environment, climate change, mountain her ....

Call to protect mountains from pollution - Newspaper

The celebrations started on Dec 7 and will conclude on Dec 13.
According to a press release issued by the university on Tuesday, speech, drawing, quiz and hiking competitions were being held throughout the week, highlighting the role of youths in protecting mountains, and mitigating impacts of environmental degradation on mountains.
Students from Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang and Skardu are participating in the activities.
Talking to Dawn, Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Naeem Khan said the aim of celebrating the mountains week was to create awareness among the citizens, especially students, about the importance of natural resources, glaciers, mountains and possible threats to them from environmental degradation. ....
