Rethinking Pakistan's climate change posture

Rethinking Pakistan’s climate change posture
Pakistan has much work to do before it can claim to be a climate change champion
The writer is an academic and researcher. He is also the author of Development, Poverty, and Power in Pakistan, available from Routledge
After the initial snub of Pakistan’s omission from the list of 40 world leaders invited to the climate summit, the United States walked back this decision, but only partially. The new US Special Envoy on Climate, John Kerry, visited Bangladesh and India in the lead-up to the climate summit held this past week, but not Pakistan. Pakistan’s participation at the US-hosted summit was also relegated to breakout sessions, where the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Amin Aslam, was given a few minutes to address a panel on adaptation and resilience.

When the German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop said that fashion is about suspense, surprise and fantasy, and not about rules, he definitely did not have the fashion trends of 2021 in mind.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, fashion has been about rules; rules that dictate that everyone shall incorporate a mask into their sense of style.
For some, the masks are re-usable, allowing the wearer to clean them after every use. Yet, for others, the masks are single-use, and the wearer must dispose of them after use. Whether or not that is the practice is story for another day.

ON April 22, world leaders from 40 countries, 17 of them responsible for four-fifths of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, held a virtual summit convened by President Joe Biden. This summit, explicitly designed to make up for the time lost by America’s withdrawal from the Paris agreement, will help the administration relaunch the US in the global climate arena, and align global climate policy with his domestic economic agenda. The ultimate goal is to have a carbon-neutral economy by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, starting with a 50pc reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

Pollstar | Earth Day Special: Sustainability's New Importance as Touring Returns

Michael Martin of Effect Partners told
Pollstar that a group of 300 road managers and 3,000 roadies are participating in a regular calls, organized by new groups like the Touring Professionals Alliance and Tour Production Group to examine their own practices and norms, and his own phone has been ringing continuously as more people seem to have a genuine desire to address the issue of sustainability in touring.
“The pandemic has been so hard for our industry, but amazingly, what has happened is with the downtime different players have started working together and talking about the critical intersectional issues of sustainability, wellness and justice,” Martin told Pollstar.  “These issues are all connected. Individual companies like Rock-it Cargo and AEG Presents Touring Groups are developing meaningful programs in these areas. And cross industry working groups have been forming. This will continue. Once you learn about these issues, you cannot unlearn them, and therefore you must act.”

Let us take action for the planet
We are all worried as the virus is causing more issues.
INTERNATIONAL MOTHER EARTH DAY
(With direct inputs from UN publication and feedback may be sent to [email protected])
We are all worried as the virus is causing more issues. People have become more concerned as it has hit once again. There is no doubt that all of us are worried but at the same time Mother Nature and the planet are also under pressure. The planet is losing 4.7 million hectares of forests every year – an area larger than Denmark. It is estimated that around one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. We are aware that a healthy ecosystem helps to protect us from these diseases. Biological diversity makes it difficult for pathogens to spread rapidly.

When Mother Earth Sends Us a Message

Card image cap

22 April 2021 (United Nations) — Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, as well as a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season, have affected millions of people.  Now we face COVID-19, a worldwide health pandemic link to the health of our ecosystem.

Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can increase contact and the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans (zoonotic diseases) like COVID-19.

Hyundai has been actively working to strengthen communication with both Millenials and Gen Z-ers, urging them to use green energy more actively. Since last year, Hyundai has been conducting a 'Global Hydrogen Campaign' with k-pop group BTS under the slogan 'Because of You' to spread the eco-friendliness and sustainability of future clean energy.

Earlier this year, the Korean boy band appeared in a clip introducing Hyundai's clean mobility vision, which was broadcast on a digital billboard in New York City. Today, the company introduced its second Earth Day video starring BTS. The first clip that was released last year had gathered over 100 million views on YouTube, and this one is expected to have as much success.

Is Your Portfolio Fighting or Fueling Deforestation?

Card image cap

Does your portfolio have mutual funds that own fast-food or chain-restaurant stocks? How about paper products? Or food or snack companies? If it’s a broad-based stock index fund, the answer is almost certainly “yes.” And that means your portfolio includes companies potentially responsible in one way or another for one of the most pressing environmental calamities: deforestation.
In 2020, the World Wildlife Fund reported that the world lost 53% of forest wildlife between 1970 and 2018.  Last year, while attention was focused on the coronavirus pandemic, the world lost 12% more primary forest than it had the year before, according to the World Resources Institute. And the IPCC’s 2018 Special Report on Climate Change and Land points out that agriculture, forestry, and other types of land use account for 23% of human greenhouse gas emissions--a primary catalyst for climate change.

It turns out that millennials have the hots for climate change and believe in being advocates of the same. When asked if they wanted a badge on their profiles to show that they care about climate change, 84% of users said yes. And so, the first-ever Climate Change Advocate Badge & Stack was born on OkCupid.
Nine out of ten respondents said that it is important that their match cares about the environment and knows the impact of climate change. And it’s not just in India. On a global scale those looking for love are looking for those who love the planet. Climate change is surely a leading issue for the majority of the millennial daters with most of them agreeing to the need to add a profile badge to their profiles, show their support and match with someone who cares about the environment equally. Data reveals that 84% users in India, 88% users in Turkey, 90% in UK and 86% in US say that they’re hugely concerned about climate change and would want a profile badge to be added to their profile to showcase the same to avoid meeting anybody who is not on their wavelength.

In 2004, Lauren Sullivan and Adam Gardner decided they would do something about it.
Step by step, the REVERB co-founders have learned how tours can better understand their consumption habits and carbon footprint, how to educate others, how to impact policy around key issues, and how to raise funds to make a difference. Today, it’s no exaggeration to say REVERB is one of the leaders in the field.

‘Cool roofing’ has been initiated in Hyderabad with the help of a cool roof-coating membrane that brings down indoor air temperatures by an average of 2°C.

This is white supremacy none of us should have a problem with. A research team led by Prof Xiulin Ruan of Purdue University in the US is painting the town white — literally — with the whitest shade of white ever produced.
So? So, this new suprawhite reflects 98% of sunlight and is able to radiate infrared heat into space through the atmosphere. And so? And so, Xiulin’s white paint can cool surfaces by 4.5°C even in strong sunlight. Painting houses white has been a traditional cooling method.

Apple Inc has created a $200 million fund to invest in timber-producing forest properties that will be managed to help remove carbon from the atmosphere while also generating a profit, it said on Thursday.
Apple last year set out a goal to neutralise its own carbon emissions and those of its suppliers by 2030. It said 75% of the reduction would come from eliminating emissions through steps such as the use of solar energy and the remaining 25% would come from carbon removal efforts.

A nationwide recycling campaign, the Million+ Plastic Recycling Revolution, has welcomed a collaboration with Pick n Pay School Club that will help educate over 1.7 million primary school learners and over 80 000 teachers about the importance of plastic recycling. Launched by The Polyolefin Responsibility Organisation (Polyco), The Million+ aims to mobilise more than one million South Africans to commit to using plastic responsibly by keeping used packaging out of the environment, out of landfill, and putting it back into the recycling value chain.
With the vision of eradicating plastic waste in our environment and to make recycling the norm for every South African, the Million+ Plastic Recycling Revolution is chasing big targets. “We are thrilled to partner with Pick n Pay School Club in featuring Million+ recycling education material in their school content kit that is distributed to a broad network of schools around South Africa,” says Mandy Naudé, CEO of Polyco. “Children are our future recycling revolutionaries; they will take important messages about recycling learnt at school back home to their families and the greater community.”
