Taichung has officially entered the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) age with the city’s Green Line beginning full service at noon yesterday, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said.
Tsai in an address said that Taichung residents were witnessing history in the making, as the metropolitan rail system has been a dream of local residents for more than 30 years.
“The official beginning of service on the Green Line shows that collaboration between the central and local governments can get things done,” she said.

Taichung, April 9 (CNA) Jenn Lann Temple in Taichung s Dajia District began on Friday the annual procession of its main deity, the sea goddess Mazu a nine-day, 340-kilometer journey that covers more than 100 temples on the way to Chiayi and back.
Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), Legislator Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), who is also chairman of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), and Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) were there to carry the palanquin at the start of the procession shortly after 11 p.m.
Dajia Mazu s annual procession, which takes the sea goddess on a trip through Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi and back, is the largest religious procession in Taiwan and have always attracted politicians across party lines. ....

On Jan. 26, a group of eight legislators from Taichung, Changhua County and Changhua City, led by Deputy Legislative Speaker Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌), called for the generating units of the coal-fired Taichung Power Plant, which belongs to Taiwan Power Co (Taipower), to be decommissioned, but not demolished.
They called for all 10 of the plant’s coal-fired units to be decommissioned by 2035, and for four gas-fired units to be built at the plant.
When reporters asked Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) to comment, he criticized the proposal, saying that decommissioning the units without demolishing them would be sleight of hand. ....
