'We will sit both sides around the table' - Public Protector intervenes in artists and NAC impasse


Last week, advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane met with the two parties respectively. 
Since then Public Protector South Africa announced plans to mediate between artists and the National Arts Council. The Public Protector argued that if the council had implemented remedial action last year, they would not be in this predicament. 
On Wednesday, 28 April 2021, the Public Protector South Africa announced its plans to mediate in the two-month-long dispute between artists and the National Arts Council and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. 
Since 3 March 2021, artists have been staging a sit-in at the NAC offices in Johannesburg. This, after they reached out to the council asking them for details on what went wrong with the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) which the government had encouraged artists to apply for in October of 2020. ....

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to make first court appearance, facing perjury charges

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is expected to make her first appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate s Court on Thursday.
Mkhwebane has been charged with perjury, which stems from findings made by the Constitutional Court judgment on the Absa/Bankorp review case.
The Gauteng DPP announced in December that it had taken a decision to criminally prosecute the Public Protector.
The Public Protector, advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, is expected to make her first appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate s Court on Thursday.
She is facing three counts of perjury.
In December last year, the Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) announced the decision to criminally prosecute Mkhwebane. ....

New AG gets R5m as Ramaphosa sets salaries for some chapter nine institution heads

Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has set the salaries of some of the heads of chapter nine institutions, including newly appointed Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke and Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka.
Maluleke, who started her seven-year term last month replacing the late Kimi Makwetu, will receive just under R5.1 million a year, in terms of Ramaphosa’s determination published on Christmas Eve.
Makwetu, who died of lung cancer in November last year, was paid R6.8m in the 12 months ending in March 2020. His pay included R5.2m in gross remuneration and R1.57m in deferred compensation, while Maluleke was paid R4.26m in the same period when she was Makwetu’s deputy. ....
