Taliban wants to subdue Afghans through violence: Danish

Second Vice President Sarwar Danish said Monday that the Afghan government would never give in to “extremism” nor to an “Emirate” system.
Danish stated that the Taliban wants to subdue the people of Afghanistan and the government through the use of violence; therefore. He said this was the reason the group was reluctant to take part in peace talks.
Speaking at an event in Kabul on Monday, Danish stated: “The government will preserve and defend the achievements of the last two decades in the country and will never give in to extremism and Emirate of Taliban.” ....

Kabul school bombing toll rises to 85 dead, 147 injured

Kabul, May 10 (EFE).- The toll from a recent bomb attack near a secondary school for girls in western Kabul increased to 85 dead and 147 injured, according to the authorities in Afghanistan on Monday.
The rise in the number of casualties in the car bombing in a Shiite-majority neighborhood, which has a large population of the persecuted Hazara ethnic minority, came as a result of a revised count of the casualties after the evacuation process.
“The latest information we have received shows 85 people were martyred and 147 others were injured,” Second Vice President Sarwar Danish’s spokesperson Muhammad Hedayat told EFE. ....

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) in collaboration UN agencies, Nai and United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) celebrated the World Press Freedom Day in Kabul and highlighted challenges faced by the media.
AJSC, UNAMA, Nai and UNESCO raised their concern over the press freedom situation in Afghanistan on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
High-ranking government officials, journalists, civil society activists, diplomatic missions based in Kabul, and UN Special Representative of the Secretary General and UNESCO were in attendance.
All keynote speakers highlighted the challenges to press freedom, journalists’ safety as well as the measures needed to overcome them. The event was in-person and virtual ensuring wider reach including participation of the diplomatic missions in Kabul. ....

Officials cry foul over ethnicity and tribe categories for ID cards

The Afghan National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) has allegedly classified a number of ethnic groups and tribes into categories – in a move met with a strong backlash by Afghans including some government officials.
The categorized list of ethnicities and tribes is included in an online platform for registration for the new electronic national ID cards.
Based on the list, all Pashtuns in Afghanistan are classified into one ethnic group but the rest of the groups such as Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks are each divided into several tribes.
Some politicians believe that the NSIA’s list “deliberately” fuels disunity among the people of Afghanistan as the organization has categorized ethnic groups based on their “villages, districts and tribes.” ....
