Indianapolis faith leaders demand action from elected officials to help stop gun violence

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) On Monday, Indianapolis lost its 76th neighbor in a shooting on Brouse Avenue.
The homicide pushed the city’s record even further, compared to this time last year when IMPD recorded 47 murders.
Sunday night, faith leaders from Butler-Tarkington churches shared their concerns and possible solutions with the community during a candlelight vigil. But their call for change is going beyond that gathering.
“We knew that this was a time for us to not just shake our heads and say isn’t that so sad. but rather to stand up, speak up and invite the community to join in and say no there are things that we can do and we wanna get busy doing them,” Leah Gunning Francis, vice president of academic affairs at Christian Theological Seminary, said. ....

Faith Leaders Call on Lawmakers and Governor Holcomb to End “Gun Violence”
INDIANAPOLIS–A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night to honor the victims who have died from what faith leaders call “gun violence.” The vigil ended with them telling Governor Holcomb and other lawmakers to take action on what many of them call a “public health crisis.”
“We are calling on Governor Holcomb as well as Senator (Todd) Young and Senator (Mike) Braun to advocate on both the state and federal levels for universal background checks to be required for all gun purchases as well as bans on assault-style weapons,” said Gunning Francis, vice president of academic affairs at Christian Theological Seminary. “We call upon our governor to make sure that mental healthcare is available to all people.” ....

California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) will host a virtual gathering for guests representing diverse communities of business, academia, government, community and faith-based organizations to welcome distinguished speaker Dr. Leah Gunning Francis, at the “Faith in Justice” 30th Interfaith Intercultural Breakfast on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 8:30 am (Pacific Time).
