Boris Johnson announces inquiry into government’s Covid response – but it won’t begin until spring 2022

Boris Johnson was today coming under pressure to bring forward an independent public inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic, after he announced that it will not start until the spring of 2022 and refused to set a date for its conclusion.
Bereaved families said that a year was too long to wait for the probe to start, while senior parliamentarians insisted that it must at least issue an interim report before the next general election to ensure voters are fully informed when they go to the polls. ....

Coronavirus infections fall but concerns remain about variants


Coronavirus infections in England halved in recent months, according to a study, but concerns remain about the threat from new variants.
Prevalence of infections dropped by 50% between March and early May, and is at its lowest since August, new data suggests.
But the figures come amid a warning from Boris Johnson that new variants “pose a potentially lethal danger”.
The Prime Minister said there is “increasing concern” in the UK about the variant first identified in India.
However, the European Medicines Agency said on Wednesday it was “pretty confident” that vaccines currently in use are effective against the Indian variant – a view echoed by some British scientists. ....

Downing Street has said Boris Johnson went to the National Covid Memorial Wall for quiet reflection after campaigners for bereaved families criticised the visit under cover of darkness .
Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice accused the British prime minister of trying to dodge relatives of those who have died during the crisis by visiting the memorial late on Tuesday.
But No 10 defended Mr Johnson s private visit to the site opposite the Houses of Parliament as being for quiet reflection , and said he offers his deepest condolences to those who have lost a loved one. ....

But Bereaved Families for Justice said the organisation was “not and never had been in litigation with the government” and had merely written a pre-action letter for a judicial review to help establish victims’ rights to have a statutory public inquiry, along the lines of that in the Hillsborough disaster. Pressed on the matter, Johnson’s spokesperson said he was “not aware he [the PM] had legal advice on this”, suggesting it was a political choice not to meet the group.
Fowler said: “If the prime minister hasn’t received legal advice that he can’t meet with us why does he keep saying he can’t? It constantly feels like the prime minister views us as nothing more than an annoyance, an inconvenience on his doorstep. It hurts that he won’t even offer us the respect of engaging with us to learn the lessons from our lost loved one. ....
