Carifta 2021: SLAA President Cornelius Breen Says, ‘We Are Disappointed’ Share this post: FOLLOWING on the heels of the 2021 Carifta Swimming Championship cancellation last week in Barbados, comes more sad news for the region’s junior athletes. The 49th edition of the Carifta Games, dubbed the ‘Caribbean Mini Olympics’ has been cancelled. The announcement was made by the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) General Secretary Vincentian, Keith Joseph on Monday, 10th May, 2021. SLAA President – Cornelius Breen “The NACAC understands the impact that another cancellation of our premier annual junior competition will have on our young athletes. Unfortunately, we have carefully taken all factors into consideration and are left with no option but to cancel the Carifta Games 2021,” Joseph said. ....
SLAA Scaled Down League Meet a Success Share this post: LAST Sunday’s scaled down athletics meet at the George Odlum Stadium (GOS) in Vieux Fort was a success even though it was the first of its kind in 14 months. Hosted by the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA), League Meet No. 1 was a five-hour event with nine out of the 10 scheduled events completed. Local Athletes To Compete After 14 Months In Limbo April 30, 2021 Share this post: LOCAL track and field athletes have something to smile about as the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) has been granted permission by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar-George to host its first event in 14 months. The event will take place Sunday, 2 May, 2021at the George Odlum Stadium (GOS) at 10.30 a.m. Local Athletes To Compete After 14 Months In Limbo The last event held by the SLAA was the National Junior track and field championship dubbed ‘Carifta Trials’ in March 2020. The SLAA Public Relations Officer, Makeba Alcide said, “Sunday’s event is a scale down one and only athletes 16 years and over will compete in the following events. High Jump and Long Jump boys/ girls, 100 metres, 400 meters and 1500 metres boys / girls”. ....
March 13, 2021 Share this post: Founded in 1979, the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) was at one time the most talked about National Sports Federation (NSF) on island. It is the only national federation in Saint Lucia to have participants in all six Summer Olympic Games dating back from 1996 when Saint Lucia made its first appearance at these games in Atlanta, USA. A total of 13 athletes under the SLAA banner have represented the island at the Olympic Games, with high jumper and reigning Senior Sportswoman for the Year Levern Spencer the only finalist to date, at Rio de Janerio 2016. It was a big plus for the SLAA when they hosted the Carifta Games at the George Odlum Stadium (GOS) in Vieux Fort, since then the GOS has been home to the St. Jude Hospital following a mystery fire in September, 2009. ....
