Novel method for identifying biomarkers may aid in early cancer diagnosis

Novel method for identifying biomarkers may aid in early cancer diagnosis
A new University of California, Irvine-led study finds a new method for identifying biomarkers may aid in early cancer diagnosis. The study focused on lung cancer, however the Cell Heterogeneity-Adjusted cLonal Methylation (CHALM) method has been tested on aging and Alzheimer s diseases as well and is expected to be effective for studying other diseases.
We found the CHALM method may be a valuable tool in helping researchers to identify more reliable differentially methylated genes from sequence-based methylation data. For clinicians, this method may aid in cancer diagnosis by helping them identify more useful biomarkers, which are overlooked by the traditional method. ....

Cats love silver vine and catnip for a more practical reason than developing euphoria

Credit: Masao Miyazaki & Reiko Uenoyama
Catnip and silver vine have been known as cat attractant plants. Cat lovers use dry leaves of these plants and toys stuffed with the leaves to give joy to their pet cats. But how does this work? What is the biological significance of the responsive behavior? A research group at Iwate University, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, and University of Liverpool found that the behavior had more practical reasons than getting euphoria.
The first appearance of silver vine ( Matatabi in Japanese) as a cat attractant in literature in Japan dates back to more than 300 years ago. A folklore Ukiyo-e drawn in 1859 shows a group of mice trying to tempt some cats with a smell of silver vine. Still, benefits of the cats response had remained unknown. says Prof. Masao Miyazaki of Iwate University, a leader of the research project. ....

Garcia to head Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics – Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

University of Pennsylvania
Benjamin Garcia, PhD, has been named head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His appointment is scheduled to begin July 1.
Benjamin A. Garcia, PhD, a noted leader in the field of biochemistry, especially for his work advancing mass spectrometry techniques, has been named head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Garcia, whose appointment tentatively is set to begin July 1, also will become the Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished Professor.
The school’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics has an illustrious history as home to some of the nation’s most distinguished scientists, including scientific innovator Roy Vagelos, who headed the department then called the Department of Biological Chemistry from 1966-75 and went on to lead the development of cholesterol-low ....
