$641K grant to boost Native Hawaiians in engineering | University of Hawaiʻi System News

Woochul Lee, to implement educational and mentoring initiatives to grow the participation of Native Hawaiians in engineering.
UH Mānoa is one of a few Native Hawaiian minority-serving four-year institutions, and is the only institution in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands granting engineering degrees from a bachelor of science through
PhD. Lee and his team believe
UH Mānoa serves a critical role in supporting Native Hawaiians in engineering.
The researchers will use a cultural psychological approach to identify potential cultural barriers for entering graduate engineering programs, develop course materials originating from Native Hawaiian culture and establish multidisciplinary programs for professional development and mentoring. These resources for Native Hawaiians at the undergraduate level will support student retention, as well as encourage the pursuit of graduate degrees. The researchers will also collaborate with the Native Hawaiian Science & Engineerin ....

COVID-19 in Honolulu wastewater reflects levels of infection | University of Hawaiʻi System News

At the beginning of the testing period, Honolulu reached its highest peak of more than 300 COVID-19 cases on a single day. After tougher COVID-19 restrictions were implemented, cases dropped to a seven-day average of 75 cases at the beginning of October 2020, when the sampling process concluded. Yan said the reduced concentration of the virus in the wastewater samples directly correlated with the drop in COVID-19 cases.
“Typically we think wastewater is loaded with enteric pathogens (microbes such as viruses, bacteria and parasites that cause intestinal illness). This study shows that wastewater surveillance can also be used to track community disease burdens of pathogens causing respiratory infections,” Yan said. “This is extremely important as we closely monitor emerging variants of COVID-19 in the community and other potential pandemic strains in the future.” ....

There’s a new king in town the king of concrete.
Or at least that’s what some might want to call Wassim Ghannoum, associate UTSA professor and winner of the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Wasom Medal, or most meritorious research paper award.
According to UTSA Today, the associate professor in the University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has spent the last 10 years perfecting a unique method to strengthen and repair faulty bridges and other flimsy concrete structures. Documenting his work with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and concrete in a research paper for peer review to the ACI, Ghannoum’s decade long developments were lauded with the prestigious accolade. ....
