Four University of Iowa faculty members Gail Bishop, Ray Fagenbaum, Cinda Coggins-Mosher, and Amy Strathman were named winners of the inaugural Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The new award is presented to UI faculty who have participated in a variety of university teaching (undergraduate, graduate or professional, classroom, one-on-one) and have contributed to curriculum and/or program development. Each recipient has a minimum six years of teaching experience at Iowa and will receive a $1,000 honorarium.

Dr. Huey Crisp, a professor emeritus of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, passed away April 9 in Little Rock.
Crisp’s love of reading and literature began when his ninth grade English teacher warned his class not to read the work of Thomas Wolfe because it was unsuitable for young minds. Of course Crisp went straight to the library to get his hands on a copy of “Look Homeward Angel.”
“Huey was one of the most avid readers I have ever known,” said Dr. George Jensen, a professor of rhetoric and writing. “He would read entire series of novels; then, a year or two later, he would go back and reread the entire series. I was lucky enough to see him change lives. You could sit near him and watch it happen in real time.” ....

UA Little Rock Student Writes $3,000 Grant for Illinois School District

A University of Arkansas at Little Rock student wrote a successful $3,000 grant for her mother’s school district in Illinois that will help raise mental health awareness for the community.
Kate Richars, an applied communication major from Newton, Illinois, took a grant writing course with Dr. Barbara L’Eplattenier, a professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, during the fall 2020 semester.
“Dr. Barb did a great job with this course,” Richars said. “I loved it. We learned basically every aspect of a grant and how to write a grant to the best of our ability. We know to pull language from the grant proposal to get the attention of those who will be reading the grant. She set us up to have the best possible way to win the grant.” ....
